Who Cares? Who Does?
Some highlights of our global sustainability and health survey 2024
Plastic waste is one of the top environmental concerns
Out of 11 environmental challenges (e.g. food safety, extinction of species, air pollution, food waste), the Top 3 concerns globally are, in this order, global warming (#1 concern for 1 in 5 people), followed by water shortage and plastic waste. These ranks differ across countries and highlight opportunities for manufacturers and retailers to enhance their reputation with respect to caring for the environment.
Most common ways to reduce plastic
Given the prominent position of plastic waste among the top global concerns of shoppers, it is not surprising that they try to reduce plastic consumption through a variety of activities. Again, activities differ across countries due to availability, hygiene concerns and habits. Globally, the Top 3 actions consist of using refillable drinking bottles, bringing one’s own bags/baskets to the store and choosing refill packs when available.
Least common ways to reduce plastic
62% of shoppers say it upsets them how much plastic ends up in their shopping. While shoppers are showing a dislike in the amount of plastic they buy, they will need manufacturers’ and retailers’ help to change this. The two least prominent activities to reduce plastic shown in the chart point in the direction of manufacturers and retailers to develop and market other packaging formats that can be used without sacrificing quality.
